I expect that the urgency and demand for the black gold will encourage a kind of drill first and ask questions later attitude.

In the limit the question will be one of environmental impact vs. profits and the desperation to keep the oil-powered status quo going for as long as that's possible.

But as I have noted, I'm sure this incident is just one of many to be seen during the next decades.

Regards,

Chris.Professor Chris Rhodeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12060542089215379056noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19508699.post-58166008411452492872010-06-08T23:16:28.850+01:002010-06-08T23:16:28.850+01:00Chris,

A little under a month after Deepwater Horizon exploded the investigative journalism program 60 Minutes interviewed survivors of that disaster and they said that BP ordered production be stepped up and corners be cut even though there were a series of mishaps which should have required greater caution.

How do we allow greater access to such inhospitable waters to companies that go out of their way to show we should not trust them?

I have a feeling when all is said and done BP will offer some scapegoats and cash to appease an angry populous and our government will accept that sacrifice but soon thereafter things will return back to "normal." But as recent events have shown us "normal" at least when it comes to big oil is not nearly good enough.

The 60 Minutes story I referred to can be found using the link below.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/05/16/60minutes/main6490197.shtmlMarknoreply@blogger.com
