I have seen lorries and buses fuelled with cng cylinders in places like Armenia where gas is relatively cheap compared to liquid fuel and so yes it might prove possible at least in principle.

That said, inaugurating the supply infrastructure and "converting" the engines to run efficiently on natural gas might take quite some effort and of course time... If it took 5 years maybe but ten years and by then we will be in deep... peak oil.

I imagine that there are those who are going to use the oil price hike and this prospective cornucopia of natural gas as a lever to make a quick buck.

Overall the outcome is the same, a real transportation fossil fuel crunch and there is no way round this other than to use less fuel/transport, and that means all that "peak oil" is usually taken to imply!

Regards,

ChrisProfessor Chris Rhodeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12060542089215379056noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19508699.post-35142861378790651702011-01-22T21:00:34.285+00:002011-01-22T21:00:34.285+00:00Chris,

There are those in the US, like oil billionaire T Boone Pickens, who are advocating using natural gas for cars and trucks. One plan he is advocating is that the United States should set up a series of natural gas pumping stations so long haul truckers and have a reliable source of fuel if their vehicles are powered by lng or cng. I do not know how practical that plan is but he is getting the attention of many powerful leaders in our congress. It could be that the very rich have much more influence with politicians, especially here in the United States, than the technical merrits of their arguments.

Do you think that substituting diesel and gasoline with natural gas is a realistic option or are its advocates are just looking for another way to make money off of rising oil prices?Marknoreply@blogger.com
